Tingsvad

The ford where the thing met The case of the cow: undecided since 980 Online since the 90s
Case file 1 · The place

Denmark's oldest undecided court case is held here. Still.

Tingsvad is made of ting (the thing: a Norse assembly and court) and vad (a ford). It is, in other words, the place where you could reach the court dry-shod – or, as contemporary sources put it, where you did not get wet, but judged.1

The painting at the top shows the thing on a misty morning around the year 980. Seven men have turned up to settle the year's most important case: who owns a cow. The sun rises behind the haze, the chieftain reaches out his hand, and the wolf in the foreground has already sensed how it will end. The case was adjourned. At the time of writing it is still adjourned.

The place was first seen by a human being in 2026, when an artificial intelligence painted it from description. Until then the thing had met in the fog without knowing what it looked like. Most of those present were pleasantly surprised.

The minutes of the thing, from Jelling to Cloudflare

The minutes have been kept by Brian since 1636 and by Gudrun the goose before him. Since 2026 they are kept digitally by the chieftain himself, on a laptop carved from granite. The machine has one key. It is called adjourned. The battery lasts a thousand years, which the thing considers tight.

Below, the minutes are woven together with the events of the wider world, to the extent that the thing has noticed them. The birth of Denmark and the invention of the computer are both recorded. Neither has affected the case.

Case file 4 · The shield

Asgeir's shield

The shield is the only piece of evidence in the case that has never been presented. Asgeir has carried it to every thing since 980 and propped it against the same stone, without at any point explaining what it has to do with the cow. The dragon on the front is, according to Asgeir, "not relevant to the case". The axes behind it are "not relevant either". Nobody has asked about the axes.

The thing's own theory is that the shield is not about the cow but about Asgeir, and that it is best left alone. The theory has not been entered into the minutes, as that would require a ruling on whether it should be entered into the minutes.

In 2026 the shield was proposed as the thing's coat of arms. Asgeir said yes. It was the first thing he had said in 1,046 years, and the thing was so taken aback that the item was adjourned.

Case file 5 · Legends and lore

What people tell when the fog is thick

Most of what is known about Tingsvad has been passed on by people who were not there, to people who were not there either. This is how the district's history has been preserved, and how it has improved.

The cow that crossed

One night in the 1100s the cow itself tried to cross the ford to get the case over with. It reached the fourth stone, looked back and turned around. Ever since, "reaching the fourth stone" has been the local expression for being close to a decision without making it. The expression is still used at the thing, typically just before an item is adjourned.

The dry year

In 1572 the river dried up, and for the first time the ford was merely a place. The thing met anyway, out of habit, and stood in the dry riverbed all summer. When the rain came in September they were too proud to move. It is the first case in the minutes to be decided: "We are standing here."

Gudrun and Martinmas

Before Brian, the minutes were kept by a goose named Gudrun. Gudrun kept the minutes for 400 years and vanished in 1636 under unexplained circumstances around Martinmas. In 2026 she was found on the back of the cow, where she had been sitting all along. Nobody had looked, because the case of where Gudrun was had been adjourned, and one may not investigate an adjourned case. Brian stated that this "explains a lot", without elaborating. They now keep the minutes together. They do not agree on who keeps them.

The man who voted

In 1799 an unknown man raised his hand and said "aye". Nobody knew what he was voting for, and he could not remember himself. He was politely asked to lower his hand, and he did. The episode is known in local history as "The Great Vote" and is marked every year with a minute's silence, which for practical reasons has been adjourned.

Case file 6 · The network

The Tingsvad network

When the thing heard about ARPANET in 1969, it decided to build its own. Six runestones were connected with tarred rope, and each stone was given a small glowing screen that nobody knows the origin of. The network is in operation to this day. It can send exactly one message: adjourned. The message always arrives, but with a delay of between three days and four hundred years, depending on the fog.

The large stone in the middle is the server. The five small ones are clients. The stone with the sun wheel is the backup and has never been used, because nobody dares test it. The connection to the outside world runs through the river, which works as a kind of cable, with the limitation that it only carries data downstream.

In 2026 the network was connected to Cloudflare. It took a day to propagate. The thing found that fast.

Case file 7 · The bylaws

The bylaws of Tingsvad

  1. The thing meets at the ford when the fog permits. The fog rarely permits.
  2. Any case may be adjourned. Every case is.
  3. Dogs, wolves, geese and other animals have the right to speak, but not to vote. Brian has objected. Gudrun has joined the objection. The objection is adjourned.
  4. Whoever brings a cow bears the burden of proof. Whoever brings two cows also bears the second cow.
  5. The spear belongs to the chair. The chair belongs to the family. The family belongs to the domain.
  6. The shield belongs to Asgeir. It is not relevant to the case. This is the only bylaw Asgeir himself has proposed.
  7. The item "any other business" is reached only when all preceding items have been decided. See § 2.
  8. Nobody may leave the thing while the thing is in session. The thing has been in session since 980. Toke the Younger has asked for a stool. The stool has been granted but not taken into use, as the case of whether one may sit down at the thing is adjourned.
  9. The network may only be used to send "adjourned". All other traffic is considered a ruling and is therefore forbidden.

Case file 9 · Frequently asked questions

Questions for the thing

Answered by Brian. The answers were entered into the minutes as one word, as usual, and then translated.

Where is Tingsvad?
In the fog. Follow the river until you can no longer see the river. That's it.
When did Denmark come into being?
The name is first mentioned around 890 and carved in stone at Jelling around 965. The thing was convened around 980 and therefore regards Denmark as an older, but less persistent, institution.
Can I have my case heard by the thing?
Yes. Cases are heard in the order received. There is one case ahead of you. It is from 980.
Who owns the cow?
That is precisely the question.
Why does Asgeir bring a shield?
He has never explained it, and the thing has decided not to ask, since an answer would require a ruling. See case file 4, which does not explain it either.
Is Brian a dog or a wolf?
Brian is a wolf. He is, however, willing to be a dog if it would get the case closed. The offer has been noted and adjourned.
What does Brian's minute-book say?
One word. It is the same word as always. He keeps it next to him so he does not forget it.
Can I e-mail the thing?
You can e-mail the Tingsvad family, who live on the same domain. The family descends directly from the chieftain and has inherited both the spear and the tendency to decide later.
When is the next thing?
When the fog lifts. See the item on foggy days above.
Painting: a grey wolf lies on a mossy riverbank with its head on its paws, looking wearily at the viewer. Next to it lies a small parchment scroll with a single word in runes.
Brian, during question time. The minutes lie next to him.
Case file 10 · Notes

None of the above is true, except for the dictionary and the lines in the minutes about Denmark, computers and artificial intelligence – those dates are correct; only the thing's reaction is made up. Ting and vad really do mean what they say, and yes, this is how place names come about. The domain is also real and has been in the family since the 90s. The cow, Brian, Gudrun, Asgeir's shield, the network, the stool and the man who voted, on the other hand, we have never seen. Source 1 has not survived, and strictly speaking neither has the quote.
